Mombasa - Malachy Harty.

We took the lunatic express to Mombasa to relax by the ocean and soak up the super Swahili cuisine. It turned out to be a nightmare as our cameras were stolen there. Someone broke into our hotel room and tipped everything onto the floor. Opening that door and realizing what had happened was a horrible moment. We lost fabulous video and photos of our safari trip, not to mind cameras that just can’t be found in East Africa, unless you know some clever thieves.

Otherwise, Mombasa was beautiful. We walked through the pretty streets of the old town, lined with elaborately decorated doors and beautifully intricate iron balconies. Through an open gate we spotted the blue sea. Men unloaded sacks of grain from a ship by hand, bending under the heavy weight and the strong sun. We wandered around peaceful Fort Jesus and took a couple of day trips down the coast to balmy Tiwi Beach for swims and sunburn.
