on Safari
- Niamh O Riordan.
We did a five day safari in the Maasai Mara National Reserve with one day on Lake Nakuru. It was interesting...
We saw lions, lion cubs, elephants, baby elephants, buffalo, baboons, wildebeest, hyenas, hippos, white rhinos, thomson gazelle, dik diks, hartbeest, impala, tope and several other species I'd never even heard of.
The landscape was wonderful. Just what you would imagine. Yellow grasses. Beautiful trees. Acres of land. It was stunning.
At night, we would stay in tiny tent with little painted windows and eat with the group in a circular thatched hut. The Maasai warriors would visit us around the camp fire. It was nice.
We took a nature walk one day and strolled through a maasai village. All of their livestock spend the night in the centre of the walled village in a thorny compound whose walls are several feet thick. How else do you expect them to keep the predators away?
We also did a balloon trip over the Mara reserve. For one hour we danced across the sky, peering down at the great wildebeest migration below. Every year the wildebeest make a mighty migration (the largest on earth) from the plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania, into Kenya. We saw it with our own eyes from the air. It was wonderful.
I would recommend the safari to anyone. It really was great fun. But what more can I say? You will simply have to try it for yourself.
