Rafting on the Source of the Nile
- Niamh O Riordan.
Don't do it. Whatever you do. Don't do it. Rapids are graded one to five where five is most challenging. A grade five rapid is difficult in terms of water volume, degree of danger or technicality. In the US, you cannot take a Grade 5 if you are a beginner. That day, we took two.
When you stay in the boat, it's OK. Even when you are heading into a three meter high waterfall. It's when you fall out, that it gets interesting. We fell out on the first rapid of the day. I managed to hold onto the boat which is an achievement in itself, but when the instructor threw the boat onto my head to right it, I was pushed under with two other rafters between me and the surface. I have never been so scared in all my life.
You are talking to the girl who jumped out of a plane not twelve months ago, oblivious to all danger. But this just scared the life out of me. My God. I reckon we came close to death that day.
Don't do it. Whatever you do. Don't do it. EVER!
